Are Adults Irrelevant?

Recently I’ve been working out my company’s brand; what are we about at Stranded Entertainment?

Although family entertainment is my genre, the specifics are in progress.  In my opinion much of what is out there possesses some elements that I don’t want to mimic.

One of my biggest issues is the role of adults in most kids shows of today.  Is it me or do they seem irrelevant? A sort of decoration on set, offering no value to the 10 year old facing a touch school situation. Most of the time absent, but on the occasion they show up they are oblivious, comically out of touch, or possessing nothing that could be helpful to kids.

Gone are the days where Bill Cosby imparts to his children his earned wisdom of the importance of doing your best in school or being yourself instead of pretending to be something you’re not.

As TV has tried to remain relevant by reflecting changes in the family unit with divorce and blending, they have lost the true importance of parents. By merely living 25 years longer adults have wisdom and life experience to share with young people. And yes, some parents have transitioned to a more friendship-relationship with their kids than an authoritatitve parenting relationship, but have they lost all sense of their role in helping their kids navigate growing up? I don’t think so.  Many struggle for sure! But parents (all adults for that matter) are not irrelevant and I don’t want to perpetuate that message.

Children don’t posses the wisdom to counsel one another well. Yet the shows these days show 12 year olds offer perspective and wisdom that is either a) unreliable and ridiculous or b) unrealistic for their age.

Part of my committment is to have shows where parents and adults can be wise and relevant; and kids can appreciate them for it and still be cool.

I would love to hear from you.  What shows demonstrate relevant adults? (Past or present shows) What do you like about the roles of adults in these shows?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
